I have raped more than five girls —Awawa boy

A suspected member of the notorious Awawa cult gang, who specialise in terrorising and raping young girls, has revealed that he had raped more than five girls around Dopemu area of Agege, Lagos State. According to the suspect, 30-year-old, Jimoh Sanni, alias Last Born, who was arrested by operatives of Lagos State Task Force alongside 14 others, “I live at 4, Akinlabi Street, Agbotikuyo, in Agege. “I am from Okene in Kogi State. I am a sectional head of Awawa Boys and have raped more than five girls around Dopemu area. My gang has burgled many shops at Aluminium Village and sold Indian hemp at beer parlours and night clubs at N100 per wrap before we go for our usual night robbery operations. “We collect N2,000 to N3,000 everyday from individual aluminium shop owner at Dopemu area and that they buy Indian hemp from another Awawa Boys kingpin named Olata, at Oloosha area at Mushin.” The other suspects are Ajayi Babatunde Lukumon, 29; Ajose Anthony, 24; Adebayo Nurudeen, 32; Olayemi Lasege, 38; Sanusi Afeez, 23; Popoola Fatai, 30; Popoola Yakubu, 27; Ajibade Oluwafemi, 20; Opeye-mi Oluwasola, 33; Adewunmi Oluwatobi, 21; Akerele Sunday, 25; Timothy Ogar, 32; Actor Amechi, 21; Jimoh Sanni, 30, and Owolabi Adediran 27 Suspects’ father mourn Lamenting, the father of two of the suspects (Popoola Fatai and Popoola Yakubu), Alhaji Musibaudeen Popoola, 66, said he had warned his children to stop following these bad gangs around Dopemu area. Alhaji Popoola said: “I found it extremely difficult to believe when I was told that two of my sons were among those arrested members of Awawa Boys. “I only came, as a disciplined father, to tell them that the end has come. It is going to be a big lesson to other children that they must obey their parents.” It was learned that operatives of the Lagos State Task Force arrested the cult members at Dopemu area of Agege after they received intelligence report on the disturbing activities of notorious Awawa Boys. It was gathered that during the operation, which was carried out at midnight and led by SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, Chairman, Lagos State Task Force, the suspects and other affiliated group leaders fought the officers with dangerous weapons before they were overpowered. Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed that the suspects should all be immediately charged to court. How I diverted, sold 33,000 litres of diesel, set truck ablaze- Suspect

For 24-year-old Osas Uwagie, an indigene of Edo State and a tanker driver, nothing more explains why he diverted a tanker loaded with 33 thousand litres of diesel than bad company. Osas who was said to have been recruited by a Lagos-based oil and gas firm (name withheld) was en-route Abuja to supply the said products. He, however, diverted the tanker to Okene in Kogi State, where he sold 400 litres of diesel to one of his clients for N230,000 cash, and the remaining 32, 600 litres sold to a filling station in the same location for N1.5 million which he was promised payment later. Crime Guard gathered that after selling off the contents of the tanker, Osas and his accomplices drove the tanker along the Abuja-Lokoja Road and set the tanker ablaze. It was learned that when the company could not locate Osas, the matter was reported to the police at State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba where investigations commenced into the matter. Subsequently, it paid off, as Osas who had absconded was arrested in Kogi State. ‘I bribed policemen with N200,000 to let me go’ Narrating his own side of the story, Osas said, “I am from a very poor background. I could not go to school due to financial constraint. When I grew up, I had to find something to take care of myself. I met a friend who was a tanker driver and I started following him. He taught me how to drive tanker and I was absorbed in the same company where he works. “My friend is currently in prison for also diverting a tanker. He was the one who talked me into diverting the tanker as well as selling off the contents. On the day of the incident, I had loaded the tanker with 32,000 litres of diesel which I was supposed to supply to a filling station in Abuja. I, however, saw it as an opportunity to perfect the plan my friend in prison and I, had. “I drove to Okene in Kogi State, stopped at a particular location there and sold off 400 litres for N230,000. While I was driving out from the spot, I was stopped by the police. They asked me a few questions for which I couldn’t give appropriate answers. They then started suspecting that I had diverted the tanker. I came out straight and told them the truth. “I gave them N200,000 to let me go. Later, I contacted an old time friend called Kabiru to connect me to people who could buy all the products. Kabiru sent one of his boys called Joseph Kola to take me to a filling station where I could get a buyer. When I got there, the owner of the filling station asked why I wanted to sell the diesel and I told him that the management of the company I work with had authorized me to do so. The man then told us he didn’t have money to pay. So, I instantly called Kabiru who asked me to wait there, that he would send someone else to take me to another possible buyer. He sent one Oyeko who then took me to another filling station. We met with the owner and I told him I wanted to sell only 400 litres, but the man insisted I sell the 32,600 litres to him. I saw reasons with him and decided to do as he said.” Setting the truck ablaze Osas continued: “Surprisingly, after discharging the diesel, they told me there was no cash on ground and requested I leave my account number, that they would get back to me. I then asked them what would happen to the truck and they said it was best I set it ablaze and disappear. They asked me to follow them as they drove in front of me. When we got to Abuja road, they asked me to park the truck close to a drainage, so that it would look like it fell and the diesel poured out. They came out, opened the bonnet of the tanker, poured fuel on it and then sparked the battery head and fire engulfed the tanker.” An anonymous source who spoke to Crime Guard intimated that Osas has worked with the company for more than two years and was even trained as a tanker driver by the company. The tanker which was set ablaze, the source added, had just been acquired by the organization. The source also put the total cost of the diesel and the truck at about N22 million.

NIGERIA RANKED THIRD IN THE WORLD FOR CYBER-CRIME, SAYS SURVEY

A computer crime as well as cyber survey conducted recently indicated that Nigeria is the most internet fraudulent country in Africa. Besides, the same report further stated that the giant of Africa is ranked third among others identified with cyber fraud and computer crime in the world. The report contained in a global computer crime and security survey brought stakeholders in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigeria together at Heinrich Boll Foundation (HBF) Conference Hall to discuss how to facilitate information security, reduce security breaches, and steps to contain cyber crime in Africa. Dr. Martins Ikpehai, chief executive officer, Computer Audit and Security Associates Ltd, Lagos heightened tension of the participants when he disclosed that the third world war might be fought on the computer considering how different attacks were being launched through internet. Ikpehai, expressing concerns on how terrorists have been distorting information on internet, said internet facility has recently become an instrument of terrorism. He reiterated that the third world war might be fought on computers as terrorist groups like Al Queada have been taking advantages of internet facilities to launch attacks and invectives. This development, he stressed, has called for concerted efforts among stakeholders, civil society groups, corporate bodies and government institutions to join forces together to rid the continent of the imminent terrorist attacks through the use of information technology. "Law enforcement agencies such as Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practice and other related offences Commission (ICPC), State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Police among others play prominent roles in the fight against the new trend of social vice. "Computer security and cyber crime awareness should be created with a view to sensitising all users of the internet facility with the emerging indicators of crime and fraud being committed through computer. "Need now arises to the surviving mega banks, oil multinationals, business conglomerates and communication firms from untold sorrow which the cyber criminals have resolved to inflict on most businesses" he said. All participants at the three-day conference agreed in various papers presented that the law enforcement agencies and judiciary in the continent have roles to play in devising ways of curbing internet fraud and enhancing their skills in computer security and risk management. Participants at the conference, upholding the standpoint of the internet group's president, unanimously stated that the diplomats, international legal practitioners and international institutions have roles to play in ensuring that legal provisions at the international level. Sensitising them with the effort by the internet group to outlaw the practice, Ajayi said the group had sponsored Computer Security and Cybercrime Bill in the National Assembly, and that its passage would mark the beginning of the war against internet crime in the country. He explained that "it is not enough to ensure that the bill is passed. But there is also need to create a centre where the victims of security breaches can lodge complaints. The Nigeria Internet Group has set up Cybercrime and Security Support Centre mainly to serve this purpose." Messer Bankole Olubamise, the executive director, Development Information Network (DevNet) said the security breaches has become so rife and frequent that it required concerted efforts of stakeholders in the industry to bring an end to computer crime in the country. He said: "variants of cybercrime include unauthorised access, theft of proprietary info, denial of service, inside net abuse, financial fraud, misuse of public web application system penetration, laptop theft, and abuse of wireless network, sabotage telecom fraud and web site defacement. "There is need to devise means to stop perpetrators of internet crime. There is need to secure the present global village, mega businesses and the posterity from the protracted evil of cyber crime without delay," he said. Olubamise, drawing inferences from the 2005 Computer Crime and Security Survey conducted by the CSI and FBI, said it was necessary for information stakeholders to conduct survey and research with a view to containing cyber-related crimes and computer security breaches. Worried by challenges that face African countries, Mr. Jide Awe, who presented paper on Building Global Competitiveness through Computer Security Education, Awareness, Training and Certification, said lack of understanding, education, training, unclear policies of government, insufficient information security and low confidence exhibited in Africa's e-business. He charged the information security expertise in the continent to identify threats to computer security, protect both internal and external threats, and human error has been a major threat to cyber security which need be addressed with care and skill acquisition and enhancement. Giving more insights on how such crimes can contained, Awe said since survey indicated that human action contributed more to security failure than technological weaknesses, more people need be educated to understand security threats, vulnerabilities and other breaches. Participants from different African countries resolved to establish African Information Security Association (AISA) at the end of the conference with a view to promoting knowledge and creating awareness about computer security and cybercrime on the continent. It was resolved in a communiqué that AISA would serve to promote global best practices in information, computer and internet security, campaign against cybercrime, conduct annual survey on information security, promote legislation and regulations and create linkages and networks in Africa.

MAN KILLS COLLEAGUE OVER GIRLFRIEND

A 25-year-old casual worker, Raphael Nwoye, on Tuesday allegedly went on the rampage in the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State, stabbing a 33-year-old colleague, Ifeanyi Onuoha, to death for insulting his lover, and injuring two others who tried to make peace.

It was  learnt that 33-year-old Onuoha was stabbed in the neck and in the back at about 8am on Niyi Ogunbameru Street after the suspect claimed that Onuoha had been rude to his lover, identified only as Ngozi, on several occasions.

Our correspondent gathered that Nwoye, who was one of the casual workers who usually offloaded containers, had had an altercation with Onuoha a few weeks back over Ngozi and had warned the deceased to desist from insulting his lover.

It was learnt that on Tuesday, when Onuoha, also a casual worker, came into the area to see whether there were containers to offload, there was a fresh argument over Ngozi.

It was said that Nwoye, who had a knife in a bag he carried, rushed at Onuoha and stabbed him in the neck and in the back.

The deceased reportedly moved away while two bystanders, one of them identified only as Kenneth, tried to hold the suspect to prevent further attack.

An angry Nwoye was said to have allegedly stabbed the two peacemakers, prompting a resident to quickly alert the Ajao Estate Police Division to the bloody fight on the street.

Onuoha, Kenneth and the third victim, whose name had yet to be ascertained, were said to have rushed to the Isolo General Hospital. While Onuoha died before reaching the hospital, the two others were said to be receiving treatment.

The suspect was thereafter arrested by the police.

When PUNCH Metro got to the area on Wednesday, most residents were not willing to talk about the incident.

A security man, Chukwu Ebuka, however, told our correspondent that Onuoha and Nwoye were friends and labourers in the area, until they became rivals over a girl.

Ebuka added that there was a third friend, Tony, who had tried to help the duo settle their differences.

He said, “The girl in question is afraid. She has left this area since yesterday. Apart from Ifeanyi (Onuoha) and Raphael (Nwoye), there is a third labourer – Tony. Sometime in January, Nwoye had raised the issue that Ifeanyi was misbehaving with his girlfriend because he insulted her, but they settled the quarrel.

“Yesterday, Tony had called Ifeanyi to come to the area as there were containers to be offloaded. When Ifeanyi arrived, there was a fresh argument over the girlfriend, and Raphael became angry and brought out a knife.

“After killing his friend, Raphael was about escaping when people stopped him that he must not escape. During that process, Raphael stabbed two more persons. They were also bleeding but fortunately, we rushed them to a hospital, and they are still alive.

“We do not know Raphael’s family. He is one of those men who do menial jobs on the street. He had been moving about with the knife in his bag for days before the incident.”

A factory worker, who declined to give her name, said she saw Onuoha writhing in pains as she came to work on Tuesday.

She said, “I heard the man shouting, ‘He has killed me o, help help’ as I was coming to work. Blood was all over the place. Both of them do not stay on this street. They only come to work if there are containers they can offload.

“People were shocked that the fight over a girl degenerated into killing.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the case would be transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation.

She said, “Nwoye was arrested for allegedly stabbing Onuoha to death. The deceased is of a yet-to-be-known address. He was stabbed in the neck and in the back, and he died on the spot.

“His corpse was deposited at the Isolo General Hospital Morgue for a post mortem examination, while the suspect had been arrested. He will be transferred to the SDCI for further investigation.”
